Preliminary task - Reece Tiwari

For our preliminary task, we had to create a story board, in order to plan out how we were going to shoot our shots, and in what order. The storyboard did not take that long to create since we were already sure as a group of what we were going to do. Whilst doing our preliminary task we had to overcome a number of different challenges. Firstly, me being the camera man, I had to shoot certain shots more than once, this was due to shaking of the camera, conversely as we shot longer I gradually got better with filming. Secondly we had to experience the use of “Imovie”, however this did not take long since everyone in my group had used movie editing software before, such as “Windows Movie Maker”. On “Imovie” we had to edit our clips by cutting down clips to increase the pace of the film. Overall, after completing our preliminary task I believe that we were successful and worked well together.

Preliminary Task

During the preliminary task, we found it beneficial and enjoyed it but we faced many challenges involving continuity, editing and use of camera. We also learnt that things are easier when drawn on paper than done as a practical. When we drew out our storyboard it looked very simple; girl walks in corridor, looks into a room to find someone, walks into room then confronts them. All we needed was three people for this task; a cameraman and two actors. Though everything planned out well we then discovered some problems with shot/reverse shot and point-of-view shot, and trying to make it look realistic using the camera. Once we completed the shooting bit of the task the next week we moved to editing on Apple's 'iMovie'. Continuity then became an issue when we discovered that a lot of the stuff we had was irrelevant as well as we needed to do some parts all over again. The main problem being that both actors were wearing different attires and the scenery we used had changed. Fortunately, we decided to use editing to a great use by cutting out parts and shortening the sequence. We then came up with a 44 second piece that was sensible.

Preliminary task – Natalie Barnes

Before beginning to film the preliminary task, we had to create a story board so we knew what shots we would be doing. This didn’t take long as we knew what we had to do and we tried to keep the task very short and simple, but still show the different skills we have.
For this pacific task I took the role as being one of the actresses, but we all gave our input to what various things we wanted to be included to our video. When filming we knew there was rules we had to stick to, like the 180 degree rule and to make our video to have continuity. We had to film the same shots multiple times as the camera was shaking and that made the video unprofessional and unsteady.
Once we were satisfied with the filming we did we then had to edit out clips. This didn’t take long as we filmed the clip in chronological order, so we just had to drag the clips into the timeline. After watching the video, be was aware we had lots of unnecessary parts of it and quickly realised we had to cut some of it out. After taking away all of the needless parts of the video we decided that adding any extra effects would be pointless.
At the end of this task, I think we all made a very good contribution to the group and worked well together.
